The most commonly asked questions regarding Angel Investors are...

"What is an Angel Investor?"

An "Angel" investor is a high net worth individual who invests directly in small companies, which need either start-up or expansion capital.  The private investor will invest amounts from $25,000 to $1 million and more per deal.  It is not uncommon for an Angel investor to become involved in several similar, but non-competing business simultaneously.  This private investor can be a retired professional or even another entrepreneur.  They possess and demonstrate ability to accumulate capital.  In addition to providing needed capital, the Angel investor also provides experience and assistance to the early stage company.  The excitement of a going concern, and a company culture with speed are features that are attractive to our Angels.  Since they are experienced business persons, they understand the need to examine and give thoughtful consideration to the entire endeavor, and thus, operate in a timeframe that appears casual or slow.  Private/Angel investors also hide; their confidentiality is paramount.  We are committed to their request.

"What are your services and what can I expect to pay?"

Should you be looking for a private investor for your business?  If you have financed your business with personal savings, exhausted family funds, and friends stop returning your calls, you most likely should learn about this small group of private individuals who invest in small companies.  This small group fills a very specific gap in business financing.   If your business is too small to generate interest from the venture capitalist, and certainly not ready for the IPO market, funding intermediaries may be right for you!  In just a few years, the number of funding intermediaries has increased several-fold.  The serious investor and the entrepreneur acknowledge the importance of interfacing with skilled, long-term business persons.  The good intermediary will be able to provide verifiable references of seasoned colleagues - of relationships build over time, and to speak of their successes in helping businesses raise money quickly.  These "agents" are committed to this business.  The qualified intermediary agent you choose will take the time to understand your company, to know where your company fits versus other opportunities; will know which Angel investors would be interested in your company, and how to reach them.  Each Angel may look at hundreds of opportunities before investing in just one.

Your situation may be that you have raised money in the past, but the past isn't today. Possibly you have been making blind calls to venture firms with little or no success.   Competition is heightened.  Now there are thousands of deals looking for the same private investor dollars.  And, remember the words of Virgil: "We are all not capable of everything."  Use of the intermediary will be a more efficient use of your time.  Your company needs you at the helm, setting the course and steering clear of any "icebergs."  Besides, there will be plenty of activity for you, since you must sell yourself, and sell the deal when the time arrives for the serious meeting!

The more successful funding intermediaries do require a modest front-end fee, but this fee does fluctuate significantly.  When you consider what is at stake, and given the scale of the transaction, the fees should be considered a modest investment.
